Helping Others Make the Right Career Choice (2)
These assessments are often called "career tests". They will gauge the interests, values, traits, and other characteristics of an individual. Once the test is completed, it is "graded" by a computer system. This system will then appropriately match an individual to the various types of career choices that they will be a good match for. These results are often the first step to instructing your clients on the right career choice. This is one of the most productive methods for a career counselor to assist their clients.
Once the tests return a set list of possible occupational choices, you should encourage your client to carefully review this list and make a list of their own on the ones that are most interesting. It is a good idea to come up with approximately ten occupations. However, the shortest acceptable amount should be right around five. By creating this list, your client is taking one of the first steps to determining a career choice that is right for them.
Once the occupational list is composed, you and your client can explore these careers together from a computer equipped with an internet connection. There are many websites available that will list the details of a particular profession. In order for your client to make the best career choice, they must carefully evaluate the description of the career choice. They then should research the requirements of the career, such as special education that is required. Earnings are another important consideration. Job outlook and the opportunity for advancement are just as important.
